Rise Survivor Fashion ShowJoy is the most radical form of resistance
Showcasing just how little the act of sexual violence is connected to what a survivor was wearing
Rise’s Survivor Fashion Show brings survivors’ stories to the forefront of the fashion industry and involves fashion brands in celebrating survivor empowerment while integrating our work with the United Nations and global partners. The show, the first iteration of ‘What Were You Wearing?’, showcases just how little the act of sexual violence is connected to what a survivor was wearing.
Hosted at MoMA in 2021 and 2022 for New York Fashion Week (NYFW), Rise’s Survivor Fashion Shows have been featured in the New York Times, Mademoiselle, Harper’s Bazaar, Global Citizen, WWD, and Popsugar, among others.
Rise has garnered support from brands like Saks Fifth Avenue, 31 Phillip Lim, Veronica Beard, Diane Von Furstenburg, Chloe, Obey Clothing, The Hundreds, Prabal Gurung, and Peter Do. Additionally, our runway featured celebrities including Kelly Marie Tran, Terry Crews, Jeannie Mai, Katelyn Ohashi, Chanelle Miller, Kweku Mandela, Tine Leung, Connie Lim, and Killer Bee as well as astronauts Kellie Girardi, Hayley Arceneaux, Sirisha Bandla, and Emily Calandrelli.

Amanda Nguyen
Founder of the civil rights organization Rise, which hosted a fashion show at New York Fashion Week to celebrate survivors

“For the survivors walking — dressed by designers including Chloé, Diane von Furstenberg and Veronica Beard — the show represented a way to confront that question head on and upend the stigma associated with sexual assault.”
